Kanishka Raja's Ephemera

from $250.00

Grid of 12, Grid of 9 or individual images available. Please E-mail me with questions. A portion of proceeds benefit Hampshire College.

This ephemera was selected by his widow, Juli Raja.

“I took some time to consider what would be appropriate in choosing the items of someone who’s died. If you knew Kanishka, you knew that he was very particular in the way that he presented himself. His objects or memories would be clear descriptions of who he was, where he had been and even where he was going.

I decided to collect only items that he had prior to our meeting in September 1995. This decision eliminates the possibility that I would inject my own sense of nostalgia or showing emotional attachment for items I thought represented him in one way or another.

When I decided to commission Tanja to work with Kanishka’s ephemera, I was delighted and then a bit concerned about how I would select items from his belongings. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and his inclusion in the project. These small objects with little or no meaning and those that hold the whole power of his being came together in a beautiful portrait of the man I loved. There’s something magical that takes place in Tanja’s studio when she captures these objects. They move from simple to the sublime, from ordinary to extraordinary. When I look at this image, I can see him and I smile.”
