DEMOCRATIZING ART

An ethos of my art practice is figuring out ways to democratize art and the art buying process – to make art available to everyday people, not just collectors and art connoisseurs. At the same time, striving to sustain myself as an artist without gallery representation, teaching or other full time job.

As a working artist, it is incredibly difficult to put together an hourly wage. Sometimes lady luck is on my side, and an image is made in a matter of hours or days, other times it takes years to get right. I base all my pricing on what I need to earn as an artist with art as my only career. It is based on my experience (25+ years); exhibition history (numerous gallery and museum exhibitions); equipment and studio maintenance; insurance (including health); paying fairly my assistant(s), and any freelance contractors I work with.

I’ve expanded my website and added a store in an effort to become transparent about money, pricing and financial sustainability in the art world.

When you pay full price or commission work, it allows me the financial security to make large scale installations without worrying about every decision. It also allows me to sell work at a discount to younger and more diverse crowd.

I work directly with (and sell directly to) everyday people, museum directors, curators, gallerists, consultants, collectors and media. I have multiple price points for work and try very hard to make at least one affordable to almost anyone.

Every Friday I have a sale and mark down one image up to 80%. You have one week to purchase the image for a discount. You can sign up for my weekly mailing list or follow along on instagram to never miss an #actfastfriday image.

I am a member of W.A.G.E. and strongly believe that artists should be paid for exhibitions, production and their time in the various forms it takes. I encourage all artists to join and institutions to become certified by W.A.G.E.
